Postdoctoral Positions- Bacterial Pathogenesis- USUHS
Positions are available to study the molecular pathogenesis of facultative and obligate intracellular bacterial pathogens in the laboratory of Tony Maurelli, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine, Bethesda, MD.
Projects on the molecular pathogenesis of Shigella involve study of type III secretion system effectors, mechanisms of anti-apoptosis, metabolic requirements for intracellular growth, and identification of anti-virulence genes and their application to drug discovery and vaccine design.
Projects on the molecular pathogenesis of Chlamydia include: development of a system for genetic analysis of Chlamydia spp.; characterization of the pathway for cell wall and peptidoglycan synthesis; metabolic pathway “hole” filling; and identification of transport systems for uptake of nutrients essential for Chlamydia growth. More information can be found on our web site at http://www.usuhs.mil/mic/maurelli.html
Experience in bacterial genetics or physiology/biochemistry and molecular biology is required. Individuals trained in cell biology who are interested in working on host cell aspects of Shigella and Chlamydia pathogenesis will also be considered. Candidates should send a letter of application, current CV, and names of three references to: amaurelli@usuhs.mil. Positions are available beginning in June 2012 but the start date is flexible.
Successful candidates will be hired as employees of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, a nonprofit medical research organization (http://www.hjf.org/). The Foundation offers a competitive salary and generous benefits package. AA/EEO
