ASSISTANT PROFESSOR - MICROBIOLOGY
School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences
Arizona State University at the West campus

Arizona State University at the West campus invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Microbiology.  Preference will be given to applicants who: 1) can provide undergraduate students with laboratory research experiences, 2) have research expertise and interests that complement current faculty research programs, and 3) have a demonstrated record of effective teaching at the undergraduate level.
General information:  The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences (http://newcollege.asu.edu/mns) at Arizona State University’s West campus is a broadly based mathematics and natural sciences unit that encompasses biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computing, statistics, and forensics.  The School offers a B.S. degree in Life Sciences with concentrations in Environmental Science and Forensics as well as a new B.S. degree in Forensics that was launched in Fall 2013.    The School emphasizes hands-on experience for undergraduates in faculty research programs and internships.  The School is housed in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (http://newcollege.asu.edu), a unique liberal arts college with R1 research university resources.  Faculty can participate in university-wide graduate programs. Successful candidates will be expected to teach both lower division courses and upper division specialty courses; to establish a vigorous, externally-funded program of research in which undergraduates participate; and to contribute service to the university.  The School is committed to recruiting and retaining students and faculty from groups that have historically been underrepresented in the natural sciences.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in relevant discipline.  Ability to contribute to the School in the areas of teaching, research, and service. Commitment and ability to work with a diverse, primarily undergraduate student population.
Desired Qualifications:  Research (postdoctoral or other) and teaching experience in microbiology, with focus in microbial biochemistry/physiology, microbial ecology, medical microbiology, or environmental microbiology.  Interest in establishing interdisciplinary research programs with other faculty in the School.  Experience mentoring undergraduates in research.  Experience developing new courses.
Application procedure:  Send the following items electronically Jamie.Howell@asu.edu:  1) letter of application, 2) a statement describing teaching philosophy and experience, 3) statement describing current and future research plans, 4) unofficial transcripts, and 5) curriculum vitae.  Please arrange for three letters of professional reference to be sent via email to: Jamie.Howell@asu.edu. Applicants should reference position #10542 in their application.
Application deadline:  December 6, 2013; if not filled, reviews will occur every two weeks thereafter until search is closed.
